Following a review the SIA Courses will be changing from April 1st 2020.

Below is a summary of the changes with regards to the courses we deliver:

Highfield Level 2 Award for Working as a Door Supervisor within the Private Security Industry  and the Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer within the Private Security Industry.

Changes affecting Unit 1 ‘Principles of working in the private security industry’ :

Changes include:
• New learning outcomes on terrorism, vulnerable people and post-incident management
Hours:
• SIA total learning time = 17 hours
• Minimum contact time = 9 (17 total – 8 distance learning – more info later)
Assessment:
• Knowledge criteria assessed via an externally set and marked MCQ exam – 70% pass mark
• Practical criteria assessed via learners completing an evidential statement – 100% pass mark

Changes affecting Unit 2 ‘Principles of working as a door supervisor in the private security industry’:

Changes include:
• Assessment criteria added – types of searching equipment, reasons for recording and preserving crime
scenes, responsibilities when controlling queues, monitoring a queue for safety issues, more content
on communication and using comms devices
• New practical assessments on undertaking a search and using communication devices
• No distance learning permitted

Hours:
• SIA total learning/minimum contact time = 11 hours
Assessment
• Knowledge – externally set and marked MCQ – 70% pass mark
• Practical – externally set, internally assessed, observation of searching and using communication
devices (radios) – 100% pass mark

Changes affecting Unit 2 ‘Principles of working as a security officer in the private security industry’

Changes include:
• New learning outcome on personal safety
• New assessment criteria on signs and symptoms of drug use, different types of searching
equipment
• New practical assessments on undertaking a search and using communication devices
• No distance learning permitted
Hours
• SIA total learning/minimum contact time = 10 hours
Assessment
• Knowledge – externally set and marked MCQ – 70% pass mark
• Practical – externally set, internally assessed, observation of searching and using
communication devices – 100% pass mark

Changes affecting Unit 3 ‘Application of conflict management in the private security industry’

Changes include:
• Assessment criteria added – situations that can lead to conflict, stages of the attitude and
behaviour cycle, risk posed in a conflict situation, recognise how to use empathy to resolve
conflict
• Three new practical AC’s covering scenario role play
• No distance learning permitted
Hours:
• SIA total learning/minimum contact time = 11 hours
Assessment:
• Knowledge criteria assessed via an externally set and marked MCQ exam – 70% pass mark
• Practical criteria assessed via a scenario-based role play – 100% pass mark

Changes affecting the  ‘Application of physical intervention skills in the private security industry’ (Not relevant for the Security Officer Course)

Changes include:
• clearer assessment criteria
• no distance learning permitted
Hours
• SIA total learning/minimum contact time = 13 hours
Assessment
• Knowledge criteria assessed via an externally set and marked MCQ exam – 80% pass mark
• Practical observation of the application of PI skills – 100% pass mark

Distance Learning

The length of a Door Supervisor Course, minimum contact hours without any distance learning, has increase to 55 hours. With distance learning (Unit 1 only) the minimum contact hours will be 44. (6 days).

For the Security Officer Course the minimum contact hours without distance learning is 38. With distance learning the minimum hours is 30.

Changes affecting learners

A requirement for new licence-holders only.
• It is an SIA requirement that training centres must confirm that each learner is sufficiently competent in first aid
• Learners should, as a minimum, have first aid skills that follow the HSE requirements equivalent to the following:
Level 3 (RQF/QCF) Level 6 (Level 6 SCQF) Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
• Learners should present their valid first aid certificates to their training providers before they start training; this certificate must be valid for at least 12 months from course start date
• All first-aid training must be completed and passed prior to the commencement of the security training.
